"Strimling Starts Campaign for US Congress

Portland State Senator Ethan King Strimling has begun his campaign to run for the United States Congress. Strimling's campaign group met for the first time on November 15th, just eight days after Strimling won re-election to his third term in the Maine State Senate."

Had a large get together just after the election. Lots of enthusiasm and strong planning.

Scoop?

One look at the man, and his expensive suit, and it is clear that such ego can only be sated in DC. A career pol, if ever there was one.

I know Ethan's wardrobe pretty well and his stuff is well worn.
He is a clothes horse and would likely look OK in about anything.

He certainly has the hair for it. It's what's under the hair that concerns me.

Francis has him pegged. Plus, he's well on his way to driving like a Kennedy.

From George's link:
Senate District 8 - Who's the Idiot Driver?
Where: Northbound I 95, approaching and into Augusta

When: Saturday, 16 Sept 2006, 11:15-11:25 AM

Who: Some fool in a light green Ford Escape Hybrid, Senate District 8 plate.
Oh, yes, I'd forgotten about this. To give Senator Scalawag credit, he did send an email to George R., and apologized for driving like a Kennedy.

From the other thread:
Mr. Rodrigues,

That was indeed me driving. I was heading up to Monson with my wife, to
celebrate my nephew's first birthday. Unfortunately, we were very late due
to my having to go to the emergency room that morning.

However, no excuses. I was definitely driving faster than I should have
(not so sure about the tailgating within a car length at 77 miles an hour,
but I'll take my medicine).

Thanks for writing. I'll remember to slow it down next time.

Ethan "The Idiot Driver" Strimling

PS Please tell "NARAN", I've submitted a bill to abolish term limits. But,
I promise, I won't support retroactivity...

Senator Ethan Strimling
211 Spring Street
Portland, ME 04102

Does this mean that Allen will be taking on Senator Collins?

It would serve to see just how strong the argument for RINO's really is. Will a blue state elect a RINO over a serious democrat? They normally nominate a nut.

If Allen runs against Collins, Peter Cianchette should be the GOP nominee. He won the 1st CD against Baldacci in '02 and is a candidate the whole party can get behind.

Pretty sure he won't be moving to Florida anytime soon.

I believe Allen is a credible threat to Collins' seat. She better start campaigning now. I believe a traditional Republican campaign will be run in the 1st District and Strimling will win unless the Dems at the state and federal levels have already "cratered in".

People should keep in mind that Strimling is not well liked by many in the Democrat Party. He has as many enemies in Augusta in his own party as he does in the Republican Party. There will be many Democrats who will work tirelessly to stop him from winning the nomination.

The key thing is that Democrat "regulars" need to unify behind a strong alternative. Someone like John Richardson. If they do that, Strimling can be beat. If there is a crowded field, Strimling will be the nominee.

Trivia question: What Republican officeholder once beat Strimling in an election?

"Too much information"
In this day and age, this is the kind of news I think we'd all be looking for.

As for some party power democrats, including the governor on some issues, not liking Strimling too much, I, again, think this is the kind of news we'd all be looking for.

You want a candidate who isn't able to think on his/her feet or must defer to power and order structure?
You want a candidate who isn't agressive, focused and ambitious?
You want a candidate who is owned or owes big favors?

From what I read here, if this guy was a Republican his character would fit just right.

Now, ideology is a different matter and on that score I can see decent discussion.

Hope he joins in here someday.

He wouldn't ever come here. Even id the Editor strictly controlled the flow of discussion so Strimmling wasn't inundated with far too many people trying to get their licks in at one time.

The better of us wouldn't let him get away with false choices ( "What would you personally give up for lower taxes?" ) and weasel phrases.

If a smart reporter who can think on their feet actually tried to pin Ethan down on a number of issues Ethan would quickly become unelectable.

Dan is right on the money in describing how Dems feel about Strimling. I am a Dem and would work very hard to make sure Strimling was not the victor in a primary. However, since the hard left candidates can do well in a primary, it would be even more important to be sure there were not a herd of middle of the road Dems that split the moderate Dem vote. That being said, there will be a pack of Congressional wannabes if Allen does the kamikazi run against Collins. Glenn Cummings will certainly think hard about running, as will Richardson, Mike Brennan (he announced 2 yrs ago-what a dimwit). However, Chellie Pingree may be seriously thinking of running which would make things tough for Ethan (man I hate those stupid signs) and what is the strategy behind trying to be recognizable by 1st name only? I guess it works for Madonna and Cher, or even Manny, but Ethan? God help us. He needs to be taken down and that ought to be something Dems and Rs can unite behind! The guy oozes unbridled ambition and that is not a compliment, please pass the barf bag.

When Allen comes up here shilling for votes, we'll be waiting for him...reminding people about the 850 jobs he cost this area.

They'll probably still vote for him.

In response to Dan Billings' query: Stavros Mendros at UMO. Do we care is the greater question. Obviously, Ethan's star has risen higher that his former adversary's.

I consider Ethan a good friend and an honest guy.

In my defense however, but I hardly consider winning a state senate seat as a Portland Democrat a bigger deal than winning in Lewiston as a Republican. Furthermore, unlike Ethan, I won my city council seat. He gets no more play today than I had on WVOM and he has yet to enter let alone do as well as I did in the primary.

Oh yea, and I have a beautiful healthy baby girl, who is more than worth the sacrifice of taking a few years off from full time politicking to spend time with.

PS. I'd take Ethan over Richardson any time.
