Want an iPhone in Maine? No Dice!

Apple iPhone Won't Be Available in Vt, N.H., Maine
Last Edited: Wednesday, 17 Jan 2007, 11:18 AM EST

Will this affect your decision to buy an iPhone?

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine residents won't be able to take advantage of Apple's iPhone because it will be offered by a wireless carrier that doesn't maintain a network in these states.

The iPhone, which combines an iPod music player, cell phone and full-featured Internet browser, is due to go on sale in June, but only in areas served by AT&T's Cingular Wireless. Apple has an exclusive distribution deal with AT&T's Cingular Wireless.

There is a Cingular Wireless store down the street from me. What are they selling?

Perhaps it is the backbone of the wireless in maine, no idea myself.

Hmm, re-reading that, I am puzzled. Maine does have cingular (I use cingular)...

Not sure.. I do not roam either.

I'm told by angry Cingular users that their phones won't work above about Gray, Maine. It seems that Cingular has no billing agreement with either US Cellular or Unicel, the old Unity Phone Company. Now even Verizon is bailing from Maine. Brace yourself. It's going to be a bumpy road. I have been with Northland Telephone and its numerous other iterations for 23 years. It has not been a happy experience. My dial-up internet connection gets up to 33K baud if the wires are dry. If they are wet, I might as well have a 19.6 modem. When complaints to the PUC build up enough they morph into another name. Today it's Fairpoint. Sometimes the bills come from South China, Maine and sometimes they come from South Dakota.

I've used my Cingular cell phone as far north as Waldo county.

Roger,
Can you not get DSL in Lee? I'm in Carroll Plt, have Northland as a phone provider and have had DSL for more than a year.

They say I'm too far from the switch. I could get it at camp because at camp I'm less than a mile from the switch in Lakeville.

Gotcha, It's boggling that one can get DSL on the camp road around Junior but not on RT 6 that close to Lee.
Consumer group complains about iPhone battery

A consumer group says it's unacceptable to require owners to pay $85.95 and ship their iPhones to Apple to have the phone's battery replaced. Free batteries for life is their recommended solution..
...snip

The battery does not appear to be user replaceable, and Apple advises buyers to take the iPhone back to Apple or AT&T for support.
Funny - somehow the ads for this device completely neglected to mention this part of the process.

I think you can only get the iPhone if you live in an area where there is service by AT&T. The phone itself ought to work here, if you bring it in form elsewhere, shouldn't it?

I would like to switch carriers, but need to have a billing address elsewhere and haven't pulled that off yet.

Hey Naran

How many times have you replaced your battery in your phone?

This is not an issue, but a bad design. Dont like it, dont buy it. (I have not)

Hey, EJ - if I wanted to replace the battery in my phone, I could do so. Me, the consumer.

I'm not the one raising the fuss, however. It's a lot of iphone owners, who only discovered this AFTER they purchased the expensive new gizmo.

I had one of my friends phones to check out for the weekend.

The battery is built into the self contained unit.

This is a computer/Solid State system.

The battery life is good too.

You could always sell your liver, your truck, take out a home equity loan and purchase a satellite phone.

Call me Fred Flinstone but I'm not going to spend $500 for a phone. So it connects to the internet with a screen that you need one of those magnifiers to see it. My god, our family's first tv had a 7 inch screen and that was hard enough to see.

Admitably, the iPhone (or any whiz-bang new tech thingy) is not for everyone. I never had a TV growing up – that’s partly why I marvel at how far technology has progressed in my lifetime.

I want one – for no good reason at all…

I want one so that my entire electronic life is Apple intergrated. Walk in the house and it all syncs by wifi. That is what I want and need.

I am happy with my Pocket PC that I got after my fall through the beaver dam. It works well as a phone, plus it is synched with my office computer so I have 24/7 access to my office e-mail, calendar, contacts, and task list. It also has web access, though I do not use it.

The one feature of the iPhone that looks like a major improvement is that it does not require a stylus for use of the touch screen.

Perhaps it's because there are more places that NO cell phone works than places where they do work regardless of the carrier... :?:

While Dan was under water, the beavers took the opportunity to steal his Blackberry and "high-tail" it out of there.

Dan - hope your injuries are healed up by now.

Wow not only are beavers responsible for my having giardia (for the 5th time) but they steal blackberries. And I wonder why the little bastards were killed off in the UK in the 16th century.
